About Construction Resource Utilization
Redefining How We Build
I started ConstructionResourceUtilization.com (CRU) with one clear mission — to challenge how our industry measures success.
For decades, we’ve tracked earned value and percent complete, but we’ve ignored the single biggest factor that drives real productivity:
how well we utilize our resources — people, equipment, and space.
I’ve spent years in the field watching skilled teams lose hours — not because of poor effort, but because of poor coordination.
Full parking lots. Blocked laydown areas. Missing tools. Cranes double-booked across multiple crews.
These aren’t small inefficiencies — they’re systemic productivity losses hiding in plain sight.
That’s why I built CRU: to create a new language and framework for Resource-Centric Planning™ — one that puts
utilization, capacity, and shared services at the heart of how mega-projects plan and perform.
Our Mission
To make resource utilization matter — ensuring every person, every space, and every hour adds value.
Through this platform, I help owners, contractors, and project controls teams identify and eliminate bottlenecks that traditional systems miss.
By focusing on how resources flow through a site, projects can unlock hidden capacity, reduce congestion, and deliver better outcomes
without additional cost or time.
Our frameworks — Whitespace Management™ and Shared Service Optimization™ — are built from real-world experience.
They bridge the gap between planning and execution, giving teams the visibility to move from reactive firefighting
to proactive performance management.
Why It Matters
Mega-projects don’t fail because people don’t care — they fail because systems don’t communicate.
Traditional metrics like CPI and SPI tell you when you’re off track, but they can’t tell you why.
CRU focuses on the “why.” It brings attention to the physical and human constraints that determine whether work is truly achievable on any given day.
By shifting focus from cost and schedule to utilization and flow, CRU helps organizations design systems that enable success — not just measure it.
This shift improves productivity, morale, and collaboration across the entire project ecosystem.
Where We’re Headed
My vision is to see Resource-Centric Planning™ become a standard discipline across all major projects — just as cost and schedule are today.
We have the tools, technology, and experience to deliver projects faster, safer, and smarter.
The next step is cultural: aligning people, space, and process under one unified model.
When that happens, the gains are exponential. Projects become leaner, teams communicate better, and organizations build a competitive edge
rooted in real-world performance.
Meet the Founder
Kyle Mussmacher
Founder, Construction Resource Utilization
Champion of Resource-Centric Planning™ and Whitespace Management™
In the early 2000s, I was a journeyman tradesperson working on a mega project.
For years, I showed up every day ready to work — but most days, I sat waiting.
Work packages were weeks behind. Materials weren’t available.
Yet the project kept paying crews to be there seven days a week, ten to twelve hours a day, just to stay “available.”
As a tradesperson, I didn’t want to be paid to wait — I wanted to build, to feel that sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
But instead, I went home frustrated and unfulfilled, knowing that something about the system was deeply broken.
That experience changed everything. It’s where my passion was born — to fix that disconnect,
to make every hour on a job site count, and to give resource utilization the attention it deserves.
I made it my mission to ensure no team ever wastes potential simply because the system failed to plan around real-world constraints.
As I moved up through the ranks, I completed my Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification and took on leadership roles on major
nuclear, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
Along the way, I saw the same pattern repeat itself: resources wasted, crews idle, space mismanaged, and shared services overbooked —
all while metrics like CPI and SPI claimed things were “on track.”
That’s why I founded ConstructionResourceUtilization.com — to challenge outdated metrics and redefine what “on track” truly means.
Through practical frameworks like Whitespace Management™ and Shared Service Optimization™,
I help teams transform how they plan, coordinate, and execute.
Today, my focus is on helping project leaders, owners, and contractors adopt resource-driven planning that unlocks capacity
and empowers people. Because when every hour, person, and space is utilized with intention, projects thrive — and so do the people behind them.
This isn’t just about productivity — it’s about purpose.
And that’s why CRU exists: to build a future where every tradesperson, planner, and leader goes home at the end of the day
knowing their time truly mattered.
